A shackle is a U-shaped piece of metal secured with a clevis pin or bolt across the opening or a hinged metal loop secured with a quick-release locking pin mechanism. Shackles are the primary connecting link in all manner of rigging systems, from boats and ships to industrial crane rigging, as they allow different rigging subsets to be connected or disconnected quickly.

There is a wide variety of shackles types and sizes available in the market and sometimes it can be baffling to choose the best suitable shackle for your rigging application, the shackle body shape is a main factor which determines how it can be used. We will go through few shackles types in this article:
The bow shackles are also called anchor shackles, these shackles have a large round shape with increased area on the inside of the shackle body which allows them to take loads from several directions without developing major side load. The screw pin enables quick (dis)assembly which makes the shackle perfect for rigging activities in which assembly and disassembly occur relatively frequently. These shackles can be used for both one-leg and multi-leg systems.
The wider shackle mouth enables you to connect the shackle to a connecting point (e.g. pad eye) which is wider than usual. The shackle is the perfect choice when the load is dynamic or exposed to extreme vibrations because of its triple safety (split pin, safety bolt and fixed nut).
D-shackle also called DEE shackle or chain shackle have a D-shape body which is narrower than the bow shackle body. The DEE shackle is suitable for one-leg lifting systems only and is available in a range with a working load limit from 0.33 up to 55 ton.
Fishing Shackle is a dee shackle with a square sunken hole screw pin (flush pin). The Green Pin Fishing Dee Shackle FP contains no protruding parts so it does not damage or get caught in fishing nets.
